नवरात्रि, वर्ष का सबसे अच्छा समय होता है I जब मां दुर्गा भक्तों के घर आती हैं और भक्तों को मां दुर्गा के नए रूप की पूजा करने का प्रतिदिन अवसर मिलता है। दुर्गा मां के नौ रूप हैं; शैलपुत्री, ब्रह्मचारिणी, चंद्रघंटा, कुष्मांडा, स्कंदमाता, कात्यायनी, कालरात्रि, महागौरी और सिद्धिदात्री। ऐसी मान्यता है की मां के नौ रुपों की विधिवत पूजा करने से भक्त को मां का असीम आशीर्वाद मिलता है और हर खुशी I

मां दुर्गा को प्रसन्न करने के लिए दुर्गा सप्तशती पाठ किया जाता है। जब दुर्गा सप्तशती पाठ की जाती है, तो यह प्रत्येक भक्त को आशीर्वाद मिलता है। शत चंडी पाठ का मुख्य उद्देश्य जीवन की सभी बाधाओं को दूर करने के लिए देवी दुर्गा का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करना है।

नौ दिनों तक चलने वाले इस पावन त्योहार में मां दुर्गा की बड़े श्रद्धा भाव से आराधना की जाती है. नवरात्रि के प्रथम दिन की शुरुआत कलश स्थापना व हवन से की जाती.बहुत जगहों पर इसे घट स्थापना भी कहा जाता है. कलश एक साधारण जलपात्र नहीं है.ऐसा माना जाता कलश में सृष्टि के संचालक ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव विद्यमान हैं. कलश की पूजा में ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव की पूजा होती है I

दुर्गा माँ के नौ रूपों का विस्तारपूर्वक वर्णन इस प्रकार है:

शैलपुत्री- सम्पूर्ण जड़ पदार्थ भगवती का पहला स्वरूप हैं पत्थर मिट्टी जल वायु अग्नि आकाश सब शैल पुत्री का प्रथम रूप हैं। इस पूजन का अर्थ है प्रत्येक जड़ पदार्थ में परमात्मा को अनुभव करना।
ब्रह्मचारिणी - जड़ में ज्ञान का प्रस्फुरण, चेतना का संचार भगवती के दूसरे रूप का प्रादुर्भाव है। जड़ चेतन का संयोग है। प्रत्येक अंकुरण में इसे देख सकते हैं।
चन्द्रघण्टा -भगवती का तीसरा रूप है यहाँ जीव में वाणी प्रकट होती है जिसकी अंतिम परिणिति मनुष्य में वाणी है।
कूष्माण्डा - अर्थात अण्डे को धारण करने वाली; स्त्री ओर पुरुष की गर्भधारण, गर्भाधान शक्ति है जो भगवती की ही शक्ति है, जिसे समस्त प्राणीमात्र में देखा जा सकता है।
स्कन्दमाता - पुत्रवती माता-पिता का स्वरूप है अथवा प्रत्येक पुत्रवान माता-पिता स्कन्द माता के रूप हैं।
कात्यायनी- के रूप में वही भगवती कन्या की माता-पिता हैं। यह देवी का छठा स्वरुप है।
कालरात्रि- देवी भगवती का सातवां रूप है जिससे सब जड़ चेतन मृत्यु को प्राप्त होते हैं ओर मृत्यु के समय सब प्राणियों को इस स्वरूप का अनुभव होता है।
महागौरी -भगवती का आठवाँ स्वरूप महागौरी गौर वर्ण का है।
सिद्धिदात्री -भगवती का नौंवा रूप सिद्धिदात्री है। यह ज्ञान अथवा बोध का प्रतीक है, जिसे जन्म जन्मान्तर की साधना से पाया जा सकता है। इसे प्राप्त कर साधक परम सिद्ध हो जाता है। इसलिए इसे सिद्धिदात्री कहा है।
